Sustainability and nautical sector: how many boats can anchor on the Balearic coast?

Recreational boating is one of the most important sectors within the tourist economy of the Balearic Islands. The number of berths in the Balearic Islands (more than 20,000) represents 5% of the total moorings in the Mediterranean and 17% in Spain. Recreational boats anchor along the Balearic coast, producing impacts on the marine ecosystem. With the aim of preserving the environment and guaranteeing the well-being of users, this study promotes the sustainable development of the nautical sector through the application of methodologies based on scientific knowledge. The spatial analysis of the nautical carrying capacity allows to establish the physical limitations of the anchoring areas in the Balearic Islands, considering different spatial scenarios and anchoring hypotheses.
