Antoni Riera

Antoni Riera Font, technical director of the Impulsa Balears Foundation, is a Professor of Applied Economics at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). Where he obtained his doctorate (1998) and where he has been a teacher and researcher since 1992. He currently directs the doctorate programme in Applied Economics at the UIB and is a member of various organisations and editorial boards.

He is the driving force behind the research group on the Economic Analysis of the Impacts of Tourism (AEIT), and his main lines of research are in the field of environmental economics. With the main focus being on economic valuation and regional economics, with special emphasis on the tourism system. Antoni is the author of more than fifty articles published in internationally renowned journals and the director of the White Paper on Tourism in the Balearic Islands. Towards a new tourism culture.

A large part of his academic career has been linked to managing the Centre for Economic Research (CRE) where he directed various publications (Informe econòmic i social de les Illes Balears and Conjuntura, among others). Also developing contracts and research projects financed with European, state or regional funds.

He also chaired the Spanish-Portuguese Association of Natural and Environmental Resources (AERNA) and received various awards. Some of them being; the 7th Catalonia Economics Award from the Catalan Society of Economics, the 5th Environment Award from the Mallorca Island Council, recognition of merits from the Manacor Town Council, a special mention from the Mallorca Chamber of Commerce and, in due course, the Extraordinary Doctorate Award.
