Salvamento Marítimo, is a Public Business Entity attached to the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda through the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy. It started operating in 1993.
It has three areas of action: safeguarding human life at sea, protecting the marine environment and monitoring and assisting maritime traffic. To this end, it coordinates all the resources available from its own and/or other Spanish administrations, which can be used in the event of a maritime emergency.
Maritime Rescue has more than 1,300 professionals on permanent alert 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to ensure safety at sea. The Maritime Rescue fleet is made up of 87 maritime and air units, 20 Rescue Coordination Centres, 6 strategic bases for rescue and combating pollution, 2 underwater bases and the Jovellanos Training Centre.
